People may not realize that when they spend their money here at home, the sales tax revenue contributes to keeping business alive by creating jobs, raising the tax base, supporting community services such as police, fire, recreation and parks along with other municipal services and even allowing support for many non-profit organizations. By simply, making the decision to shop and dine here in town, people directly contribute their own quality of life.
The Chamber and Economic Development Commission have launched aggressive campaigns to raise awareness in our community and encourage our citizens to spend their money at home. This is an annual campaign that has run since 2010, from the beginning of October through the end of December, saturating television, radio and print with advertising including the tagline “Thanks for Shopping Santa Maria,” along with a message about the impact of our sales tax revenue.
We also circulate buttons, stickers and window clings with the simple message “Thanks for Shopping Santa Maria” and asked our retail businesses to wear the buttons and affix the stickers to sales receipts to help spread the message. We think that by getting this message out in the face of our community, we can really make a positive impact on their spending habits thereby giving a boost to your sales and our local economy.
We hope you will join us in spreading the message and remembering to keep you sales tax dollars within the community. If we all make the effort, this can have a very positive impact over the entire Santa Maria Valley.
